1) Had a meeting with LJ yesterday I'll type up my notes over the weekend for a progress report. 2) Since we got an enclosed back porch Roswell and Safetypin have taken up some sort of self-imposed guard duty that involves caterwauling to be let out every morning to they can check on the status of a) the bird invasion and b) whether or not that fiendish grey stray is walking through the yard (he's a rebel, I think they're secretly in love with him.) Well, since the snow fell this has been replace by c) complaining that we've opened the wrong door, they want the one without the snow please. Finally yesterday Safetypin mustered up the nerve and went out for about 60 seconds, decided she didn't like the snow and came back in. Half an hour later Roswell worked up the nerve and walked out. The snow -- so fascinating! It must be examined! After some time she did what any sentient, self-aware being would do and decided to use this medium for art -- to construct a cat of snow that would explain her view of the world, her emotions, her turmoil, her essence. After she constructed her art piece, she came back in -- satisfied, but a bit aloof after her triumph. We're having showings at 5:00 and 7:00 ever night until it melts, with wine and cheese and cat treats. Here is Roswell's snow sculpture: I think it's beautiful. I'm going to get her a beret for Xmas.

Last full day of work ahead. Awesome. Tomorrow we are getting sprung at noon. Awesome. I smell like sandalwood today. More Awesome. All right, so I don't have much to talk about. This time of year feels so rushed and hectic it numbs me a bit. I would rather withdraw and nest which is more in keeping with this time of year in this hemisphere. Tonight I am going to make some yummy food, and chill out. I really want to read my book, but just haven't been able to get to it. That makes me sad. |

I really think that 2009 can just leave now. A coworker's sister was killed in a car accident on Sunday. That is beyond messed up and I can't even come up with words. I didn't get home last night until almost 11 pm. That is super late. Everyone was heading out the door after dinner pretty much as soon as it was over. I am still feeling reaallly tired today, hence, I am skipping out on yoga class. Yes I had some wine which is contributing to the tiredness. But I did not get drunk and feel too hot and then take off my clothes and try to make out with everybody. I only do that at home, or possibly in your house. Or something. What? I will totally kiss your girlfriend while you hold my wine glass. *whistles* I checked the mail tonight and found the most lovely earrings from faerishimmer !!!! If you haven't checked out her jewellery, get on it and get your credit card out while you are at it. Also, she loves glitter and now I am covered in glitter. This pleases me to no end! As it should to anyone from that super sekrit cult thing. Glitter was trying to escape from the envelope before I opened it, but no, she is wily and taped it shut for maximum glitterness. For those of you that yell 'pics or it didn't happen' then here you go: I can't seem to get shots of myself covered in glitter because it's too awkward. Content yourself with conjuring up very sparkly thoughts of me. Then, continuing to open the mail, Mike's grandparents sent the usual card & a cheque for $50!! That's pretty sweet.
Also, the car is fixed. Stupid flywheel thingy. When Mike picked up the car, the guys forgot to lock up. Hmm. Luckily the rottweiler & german shephard know him, so they let him leave after he locked the door & the gates. So, sad start to the week, but it seems to be continuing on the upswing. I personally feel like not working this week and find it horribly inconvenient to have to keep getting up in the morning. My brain is already on holidays. Let it be holiday time now please.

I recently unearthed a few of the original Atrocities catalogues and some other assorted printed ephemera including two of the incredibly rare "Atrocities ~ The Premiere Collection" catalogues from 1994(!!) hand-tied with strands of vintage black Chantilly lace, and 9 of the lavish 1997 edition, so I wanted to make these collectibles available to those who might wish to have them. I even still have the original black linen envelopes that were custom ordered at the time to send these in... so it really is like stepping back in time. In addition to the catalogues, I'm including an assortment of Atrocities/Kambriel ephemera chronicling the past nearly 16 years ~ going all the way back to the first Atrocities business cards! Feel free to read more of the details & see the photos in my journal here: http://kambriel.livejournal.com/245190.htmlAs I signed off in the first Atrocities catalogue... I had a rather nice person recently ask if I still had any of the original printed Atrocities catalogues, and while unearthing the layers to see what assorted printed ephemera I could gather, I found that I actually have 2 extra (above and beyond the thirteen I've held on to for posterity) of the incredibly rare "Atrocities ~ The Premiere Collection" catalogues from 1994(!!), and 9 of the lavish 1997 edition, so I wanted to make these collectibles available to those who might wish to have them. I even still have the original black linen envelopes that were custom ordered at the time to send these in... so it really is like stepping back in time. I'll even throw in some of the original bat confetti while I'm at it though the iridescent stars are long gone ;) In addition to the catalogues, I'm including assorted Atrocities/Kambriel ephemera chronicling the past 15 (nearly 16) years. This goes all the way back to the first Atrocities business cards (printed on greystone cardstock with black raised ink). The 13 piece 1997 catalogue & printed ephemera set will be $20 including shipping in US (all other countries please add $3). Only nine of these sets are available. The collection spans more than a decade and is comprised of the: Extremely limited edition 1997 Atrocities catalogue Atrocities "bat" business card Atrocities "gothic arch" business card Atrocities "Gothic Nightdress/Mourning Veil" postcard Atrocities "Dracula's Bride" full-colour sticker Kambriel "Medusa" full-colour sticker Kambriel "Theda" business card Kambriel "filmstrip" postcard Kambriel "Lygeia" b&w vinyl sticker Kambriel "Sepia" postcard Kambriel "La Plume" business card Kambriel "Midnight Bustle" business card Kambriel "Lace Filigree" postcard Then, the Premiere Atrocities catalogue from 1994 ~ printed on heavyweight paper in full black reverse bleed, with half tone images and matte silver ink for the title on the cover, hand tied with strands of vintage black Chantilly lace. A definite piece of Gothic fashion history! Only two of these are available, for $25 each (including shipping anywhere and can be sent with the above collection if you'd like to have the *complete* set). You can order these through the website here or via PayPal to info at kambriel dot com As I signed off in the very first catalogue... Tonight is the night of a family tradition: Dad and I go Christmas shopping. We have done this for ... well, since I was very small. We will go have dinner, try and figure out what the heck to get cupcakegothmom as presents, and generally hang out and have a good time. Yes, I deliberately wore my skelly Docs to try and ward off the inevitable "Are you a Christmas caroler?" questions that my top hat seems to inspire. Yeah yeah, I know, I'm still going to be asked that.

Note To Self: you need to track down more silver kilt pins, because they work very well as a vaguely punk-ish way to turn pendants into brooches.

I hope everyone had a good Solstice. I am looking forward to more light. Not because I like sunlight all that much, mind you, but because things have been dark for a lot of people lately.
---
I need to take another bash at writing the post that will be the intro to the more informal reviews section on GCS. I would say maybe tomorrow night, but ahahahahaah. I need to wrap presents. I also need to email the delightful organizers of the Mourning Market and talk to them about a possible GCS reading at the next one.

Okay, time for coffee (thank you, oh darling Stroppy One! The scone was very tasty, too.), and back to editing. For there being hardly anyone in the office, I have a surprising amount of work. |

Pets and their carbon paw prints. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091220/sc_afp/lifestyleclimatewarminganimalsfood Man's best friend could be one of the environment's worst enemies, according to a new study which says the carbon pawprint of a pet dog is more than double that of a gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle.
Okay. Let’s take a look at this. The Vales, specialists in sustainable living at Victoria University of Wellington, analysed popular brands of pet food and calculated that a medium-sized dog eats around 164 kilos (360 pounds) of meat and 95 kilos of cereal a year. Combine the land required to generate its food and a "medium" sized dog has an annual footprint of 0.84 hectares (2.07 acres) -- around twice the 0.41 hectares required by a 4x4 driving 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) a year, including energy to build the car. Alright, but most dog food, even those “premium” brands are made from scrap meat. Face it folks, your beloved Fido is eating lips and assholes. No matter what the label says. It’s that biggest scam. And those cereals? All the crap that does not make the cut for your Wheaties. So really, this is the scrap that would be left to rot, causing more greenhouse gasses. Cats have an eco-footprint of about 0.15 hectares, slightly less than driving a Volkswagen Golf for a year, while two hamsters equates to a plasma television and even the humble goldfish burns energy equivalent to two mobile telephones. I have two cats and drive a VW Rabbit. Which is a Golf, but with a high performance engine that has better gas mileage. But despite the apocalyptic visions of domesticated animals' environmental impact, solutions exist, including reducing pets' protein-rich meat intake. "If pussy is scoffing 'Fancy Feast' -- or some other food made from choice cuts of meat -- then the relative impact is likely to be high," said Robert Vale. My cats eat Friskies. A cat food that contains the right amount of proteins and nutrients. I’ve never kidded myself. I know that it’s scrap, but scrap that’s good for them. I also recycle the steel cans that contain post consumer content. "If, on the other hand, the cat is fed on fish heads and other leftovers from the fishmonger, the impact will be lower." Only if you clean the litter box afterwards. Those fish heads can add up in dollars and some cats do have fish allergies. Besides, if those scraps are coming from fish that are wild caught and not farm raised, you are adding strain to an already over fished ocean. Didn’t you see Happy Feet? Other potential positive steps include avoiding walking your dog in wildlife-rich areas and keeping your cat indoors at night when it has a particular thirst for other, smaller animals' blood. Both of my cats are indoors only, so no worries there. And you really should keep your cats inside. You keep your pet disease and injury free as well as keeping all of the local critters safe. And please, pick up your dog’s poo. If you have ever stepped in some random pile of crap, left there by your neighbor’s Great Dane, then you know where I’m coming from. You can even buy biodegradable bags. While walking Muffy in a scenic woodland setting maybe fun and relaxing for you, think on these few words; fleas, ticks, lyme disease, and attack by local wildlife. But the best way of compensating for that paw or clawprint is to make sure your animal is dual purpose, the Vales urge. Get a hen, which offsets its impact by laying edible eggs, or a rabbit, prepared to make the ultimate environmental sacrifice by ending up on the dinner table. "Rabbits are good, provided you eat them," said Robert Vale. Chickens are soooo not cuddly. I hate them. Evil things do taste good though. And while I love George, Jezebel and Sprite, and we have no intention to make them dinner at any point in their lives, if the shit really hit the fan, they would be on the menu way before the cats or Brian would be. |

So yesterday, I got this email entitled "The world needs more Evans" and it was one of those chain letters, you know the sort, you see it on snopes.com all the time -- some kid wants to collect ten thousand post cards before he dies, a soldier requests prayers for a fallen comrade, but this one -- i knew this one was true because I'd helped start it -- someone had forwarded me a letter from Evan's mother -- you remember Evan, the kid who gave his life savings, $47.65 to City Kitties, the stray cat rescue group (Copy of Evans original heartwarming letter here.) This person was asking if I might help spread Evans altruism this holiday season by forwarding this letter to some people. How awesome that Evan's boomerang would pass by me again. You know that person in the office who's always sending you the emails about missing people, places you should boycott, similarities between Washington D.C. and Sodom -- why not send them a copy of this -- you might see yourself on snopes.com in a week: Subject: The World Needs More Evans
I can barely explain this, and I can't help but brag about it. Evan saved up his allowance for months and donated $46.75 to City Kitties, the cat rescue from which we got our adorable (if mischievous) Macha. He wrote them a sweet note. They posted it on their Facebook page, and it went viral. Kyle Cassidy matched Evan?s donation to City Kitties and suggested that others do the same. At last count, it had been “retweeted” (I vaguely understand that) 147 times. Bloggers are linking back to other blogs. Within hours, City Kitties received more than $400 in donations, and they are still coming. Other people have donated to rescues in Arizona, Tennessee, California, Toronto, and locations unnamed, in Evan?s honor. A woman in Austin, Texas made a video requesting donations for her local animal shelter, and credited Evan with inspiring her to take the time to do so. Sample comment from the blogs: “the world needs more Evans.” We agree. J
You can see his note here (and elsewhere!):

Forgive our bragging! We are just astounded!
Happy holidays, everyone.

(in other news, we have heat -- perhaps it's a reward from above or perhaps it's just competent furnace repair people.) go be awesome.

As soon as I finish typing this I am going to bed. Work Christmas party was tonight. Food was fancy. A bit too fancy for my taste. We were the coolest table though, meaning we were laughing the loudest all night. A couple of times I was laughing so hard I was crying.
Also, shocking - I drank some wine tonight. I haven't drank in ... years. No real reason really, I just don't feel like it anymore. It's those bad influences I was sitting with.
All right, time to hit the pillow with everything I've got. |
